According to a new leak, Google might be planning its own location tracker tag like Apple’s AirTag. And it has already started working on it as it is under its progress is going under Google’s Nest team.
Apple’s AirTag and Samsung’s SmartTag have already grabbed a lot of people’s attention on smart trackers by which you can track location in your phone, and Google is also entering the competition by bringing its own smart tracker soon.
A well-known android developer Mishaal Rahman found some references regarding Google’s smart tag in the Google Fast Pair developer console as it was listed with a device type with the name “Locator Tag”.
Google is reportedly working on a location tracking tag to compete with the likes of Apple’s AirTags and Tile trackers, according to developer (and reliable leaker) Kuba Wojciechowski.
Wojciechowski discovered references that indicate Google is working on support for locator tags in Fast Pair — Google’s method for quickly pairing nearby Bluetooth devices — and claims in a Twitter thread that Google is developing its own first-party tracker to use with the feature (seen via Sammobile).
The tracker by Google will use Bluetooth low energy (BLE) and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. As per reports, UWB is a radio-based communication technology that can offer accurate location abilities. The tech giant has already integrated the technology into its latest Pixel phones such as the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro.
While we don’t have images of the tracker to work with, Wojciechowski does believe that it’ll be offered in multiple colours. Chipolo offers some of its trackers in different colors, while Tile tends to use the same white and black colors across all of its products. Apple only sells AirTags in a single colour.
Other tidbits include support for ultra-wideband technology for more accurate location finding, while a speaker is also expected to be built into the product to help people find things more easily.
While there is currently no hard release window for when we can expect this product to go on sale, nor how much it will cost once it does. But Wojciechowski suggests that there is a possibility of an announcement at this year’s Google I/O developer conference with a release later this year.
Besides, Kuba also noted that Google would release this tracker in multiple color options, and like Apple’s AirTags, it will also have an onboard speaker so that users can easily locate it or their missing device with the help of sound.
However, there is not much information about its feature, but Google’s tracker tag is expected to provide more features than Apple’s AirTags because AirTag is only limited to iPhones, and Google’s Android has command over the major smartphone market.
Currently, there is no leak regarding when Google is going to launch this smart tracker, but there are higher chances that the company will unveil it with the launch of the new Pixel Tablet.
